Our Story
The Gulmohar story began in the early childhood years of its two founders, Nazli Ali and Farah Naeem; they created Gulmohar as an ode to childhood, to the eyes that see the world as a moving water colour painting, where every impression makes an imprint on the soul of the child through feeling, touch and awakening.
Farah’s own early years were spent in making mudhouses and playing traditional games with pebbles and stones, playing circle games with her siblings, writing alphabets on bubbles with her mother while washing clothes and creating infinite imaginative shapes and stories with silk scarves. Her memories of that time center around the warmth and taste of molasses candy, of playcloths used for creating houses and of imaginative play. What is Waldorf Education
Waldorf Education is an internationally recognised educational philosophy and methodology that is based on the ideas of Rudolf Steiner. Rudolf Steiner (1861 – 1925) was an Austrian philosopher who developed innovative and revolutionary ideas in education as well as agriculture, medicine, architecture and social reform. Steiner recognised that childhood is the most precious and significant time in the life of a human being and is the foundation of the developing human being. By creating an educational environment that really allows the creative and cognitive abilities to thrive, we are really creating a strong base for their social, emotional and academic development later on.
According to Steiner, the human being is a three-fold being of body, soul and spirit. He theorized that there are three distinct developmental stages for children on their path to adulthood, and they develop in seven year cycles: from birth to seven, from seven to fourteen and from fourteen to twenty one. The stages are, early childhood, middle childhood and adolescence. Steiner depicted the growth of the human being in these seven year cycles and specified what teachers must cultivate in the children.
